Mogadishu and Djibouti Ports Strengthen Partnership for Regional Prosperity

Mogadishu, Somalia — The Directors of Mogadishu and Djibouti Ports, Amb. Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur Americo and Aboubaker Omar Hadi, have held strategic talks aimed at expanding cooperation and boosting regional connectivity across the Horn of Africa.

The meeting focused on deepening operational collaboration, improving cargo management systems, and aligning infrastructure development to support faster, more efficient trade between the two maritime nations. Both sides emphasized that strengthened port partnerships are central to unlocking the region’s vast economic potential.

Amb. Americo, who heads the Mogadishu Port Authority, described the talks as “a milestone in regional integration,” highlighting Somalia’s commitment to modernizing its maritime sector.

“Our vision is to make Mogadishu Port a key player in East African trade. Working closely with Djibouti — a regional leader in logistics and port management — will help us share expertise and create new trade routes that drive prosperity for our people,” he said.

Hadi, Chairman of Djibouti Ports and Free Zones Authority, echoed that sentiment, underscoring the importance of collaboration over competition.

“Djibouti’s growth is linked to the success of its neighbors. By joining forces with Somalia, we can build a more connected Horn of Africa — one where goods, ideas, and opportunities move freely,” he stated.

The two port authorities discussed joint capacity-building programs, digital tracking systems, and streamlined customs processes to reduce trade bottlenecks.

Observers say the renewed partnership symbolizes a positive shift toward regional self-reliance, as Horn of Africa nations increasingly work together to transform their strategic geographic advantage into shared economic progress.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to translate dialogue into action — positioning Mogadishu and Djibouti Ports as twin engines driving maritime growth and regional cooperation.
