Mogadishu Mayor Launches Reconstruction of June 26 Road

Mogadishu, Somalia – Dr. Hassan Mohamed Hussein Muungaab, who was reappointed as Mayor of Mogadishu and Governor of the Banadir Region on May 28, 2025, has officially kicked off reconstruction work on the June 26 Road in the Hodan District.

His appointment followed serving briefly in late 2024 and previously from 2014 to 2015.

At a ceremony held on-site, Mayor Muungaab underscored the road’s significance, noting that June 26 connects densely populated residential neighborhoods with key commercial and governmental hubs.

“Revitalizing this corridor is essential for commerce and daily life in Hodan,” he stated.

The project aims to include repaving, installation of modern drainage systems, clearer road markings, signage, and safer pedestrian pathways.

The Mayor conveyed that the initiative aligns with his broader nine-point urban development agenda, which emphasizes infrastructure repair, improved service delivery, and enhanced security—critical to stabilizing the capital ahead of upcoming national elections.

Attending officials from the Banadir Regional Administration and local engineering firms confirmed that work would begin immediately and stretch over several months, weather and security permitting.

Contractors have been tasked with minimizing disruption during peak traffic hours and coordinating with residents and businesses to ensure smooth progress.

Local community members welcomed the development with one business owner near June 26 telling reporters the rehabilitation would reduce transport delays and support small enterprises previously hampered by potholes and flooding during rainy seasons. Mogadishu’s recent flood in May damaged six major roads, including parts of road thus reinforcing the urgent need for reconstruction.

Mayor Muungaab called for civic cooperation throughout the project, urging residents to help maintain the upgraded road and discourage vandalism. He affirmed the reconstruction is part of a citywide restoration effort extending across multiple districts.

The scope of the project includes tarmac resurfacing, drainage upgrades, pedestrian walkways, and installation of traffic signage.

It is being overseen by the Banadir Regional Administration’s Department of Public Works and Urban Development. Construction is set to begin in July 2025, with the timeline depending on weather and security conditions. The project is expected to ease congestion, improve safety, enhance business access, and bolster civic confidence.

This reconstruction represents a tangible step in Mogadishu’s broader recovery process, affirming the municipality’s renewed leadership under Mayor Muungaab and contributing to long-term urban renewal plans.
