Mogadishu, Somalia — The Director General of Mogadishu Port, H.E. Ambassador Mohamed Ali Nur, widely known as Amb. Americo, led senior officials on an inspection tour of Somalia’s largest seaport to assess progress on ongoing expansion and modernization projects.
The visit covered key sections of the port, including new cargo handling areas, container terminals, and security infrastructure. According to port officials, the upgrades are designed to strengthen Mogadishu’s role as a regional trade hub, improve efficiency in cargo clearance, and create better conditions for international shipping lines operating in Somalia.
Amb. Americo emphasized that the modernization of the port is central to Somalia’s economic recovery and integration with global trade. The projects underway include deepening of berths to accommodate larger vessels, installation of modern cranes and handling equipment, expansion of storage facilities, and digitization of customs processes to reduce delays and increase transparency.
Mogadishu Port handles the majority of Somalia’s imports, including food, fuel, and construction materials. Enhancing its capacity is expected to lower costs of goods in local markets and stimulate private sector growth. The port has also become a critical revenue stream for the government, making its development a national priority.
Port officials noted that the expansion works are being implemented in phases to avoid disruption of daily operations. Once completed, the modernized port will be able to compete with major ports in the Horn of Africa, attracting new investments and supporting Somalia’s ambitions to revive its maritime economy.
The inspection reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring that infrastructure upgrades meet international standards and respond to the growing demand for trade services in the country.
