Mogadishu Port Sets Record-Breaking Milestone, Strengthening Its Place as East Africa’s Maritime Leader

Mogadishu, Somalia – October 2025 marked a historic month for Mogadishu Port, as the nation’s busiest maritime gateway achieved its highest productivity of the year — a reflection of Somalia’s growing trade resilience and improving economic management.

According to the latest performance data, the port recorded an impressive 15,647 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in container throughput, the highest figure this year. In addition, it handled 120,787 metric tons of non-containerized cargo, a record-breaking volume that underscores the port’s expanding capacity and efficiency. Total tonnage and revenue also reached new highs, signaling strong momentum in operations and logistics.

Behind these achievements lies the dedication and teamwork of hundreds of men and women who keep Mogadishu Port running every day — from stevedores and crane operators to engineers and customs staff. Their collective effort has helped transform the facility into one of the fastest-improving ports in the region.

The milestone comes just months after the World Bank’s Container Port Performance Index ranked Mogadishu first in East Africa and fourth across Africa, a recognition that placed Somalia firmly on the map of competitive maritime economies.

Under the management of Alport Mogadishu, the port has made major strides in operational modernization, digital tracking systems, and safety compliance. These improvements have enhanced turnaround times, reduced congestion, and bolstered investor confidence in Somalia’s logistics sector.

For a country rebuilding its infrastructure after decades of disruption, Mogadishu Port’s rise is more than a technical success — it is a story of national pride and perseverance. It shows what coordinated effort, institutional reform, and international partnerships can achieve when aligned with a shared vision for progress.

With October’s results setting a new benchmark, the port authority says the focus now is on sustaining growth and maintaining high standards across all operations. The ambition is clear: to make Mogadishu not only the most efficient port in East Africa, but a continental hub for trade, connectivity, and opportunity.
