Mogadishu Prepares to Host 2nd National Disaster Resilience Conference

Mogadishu, Somalia — The Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mahamuud Moallim, on Sunday chaired a high-level preparatory meeting at the agency’s headquarters in Mogadishu to accelerate planning for the 2nd Somalia Disaster Resilience Conference, scheduled to take place on October 22–23, 2025.

The consultative session brought together senior SoDMA officials and technical staff to review progress on logistical arrangements, stakeholder coordination, and the conference agenda. The upcoming conference is expected to convene key national and international partners, government institutions, humanitarian organizations, climate experts, and community leaders under the theme of strengthening Somalia’s resilience to natural and man-made disasters.

Commissioner Moallim emphasized the importance of building on the outcomes of the inaugural conference, held in 2023, which laid the foundation for a unified national disaster risk reduction (DRR) framework. He stressed that the October event would serve as a crucial platform to assess progress, share innovations in disaster preparedness and response, and galvanize greater support for climate adaptation and community resilience across Somalia.

“We are committed to ensuring this conference will not only reflect our collective achievements but also shape the path forward in building a resilient Somalia,” said Moallim.

Somalia remains one of the most climate-vulnerable countries in the world, frequently affected by droughts, floods, and conflict-driven displacement. The 2nd Somalia Disaster Resilience Conference is poised to highlight integrated strategies for early warning systems, community-based risk reduction, financing resilience, and local capacity building.

Preparations are ongoing, with SoDMA promising close collaboration with federal and state governments, civil society, and international partners to ensure the success of the landmark event.
