Mogadishu’s Green Zone Under Heavy Attack

One of Mogadishu’s most heavily fortified structures, the Green Zone, is under heavy attack. Mortar shells struck this Mogadishu landmark. The attack left a foreign national wounded. Security forces said the mortar shells were aimed at Halane Base Camp.

The base camp is famous for hosting many western embassies. It also serves as the headquarters of United Nations locally. The main command center of AMISOM is located at Green Zone too.

The shelling happened despite tight security steps put in place all over the city. Following the attack, operations at the city’s busy Aden Adde International Airport ceased. For over 30 minutes, flights to and from the airport were halted.

Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the attack. The militant group says its members carried out several mortar shell attacks on Green Zone, which damaged the property and caused several casualties.

Mogadishu has experienced security breaches, political chaos, and destruction for decades. Green Zone remains one of the city’s rarest secure places. This recent attack is likely to raise more than a few eyebrows.
