MPs Agitate for Stronger Fiscal Accountability in Somalia’s 2026 Budget Review

Mogadishu, Somalia – Somalia’s review of the proposed 2026 national budget advanced toward approval on Thursday after the Joint Finance and Budget Committee wrapped up an in-depth session with the Ministry of Finance, laying groundwork for stricter fiscal controls and sharper development goals for the year ahead.

Lawmakers from both houses leveraged the meeting at Villa Hargeisa to advocate for enhanced accountability steps, better explanations for expenditures, and more dependable revenue projections.

This examination should mold the budget’s final draft, guiding allocations of national funds to security, social services, infrastructure, and economic initiatives.

The Minister of Finance, Bihi Iman Egeh, informed the committee that recent revenue upticks now form a firmer foundation for supporting vital services. Committee members said his replies illuminated the 2026 fiscal strategy and provided confidence in straightforward resource handling.

The session’s results amplify Parliament’s sway in the budgeting procedure and signal a pivot to more rigorous financial stewardship.

The committee’s proposals will steer adjustments to the budget draft ahead of its full parliamentary discussion.

Once approved, the 2026 budget should bolster Somalia’s development efforts by enhancing service provision, fostering economic steadiness, and syncing spending with sustained recovery and state-building aims.
