Muungaab Rallies Banaadir Residents for Voter Registration Drive

Mogadishu, Somalia – Banaadir Regional Governor Hassan Mohamed Hussein Muungaab joined local residents today in a community-wide event aimed at promoting voter registration ahead of Somalia’s anticipated “one person, one vote” elections.

Addressing a large gathering in Mogadishu, Governor Muungaab emphasized the importance of civic participation and highlighted voter registration as the foundational step toward ensuring inclusive and democratic elections. The event, organized in collaboration with local authorities and civil society groups, aimed to mobilize citizens to register and prepare for the landmark electoral process.

“This is not just a technical exercise. It is a national duty. Every eligible Somali must take part in shaping our future by registering to vote. The ‘one person, one vote’ system will empower all citizens equally and bring legitimacy to our governance structures,” said Muungaab.

Somalia is preparing to transition from the clan-based indirect electoral system to a universal suffrage model. The National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC), with support from the federal government and international partners, has been working on laying the groundwork for this significant democratic shift.

Governor Muungaab commended ongoing efforts by election officials, security agencies, and international partners supporting the electoral roadmap. He urged traditional elders, youth leaders, and women’s groups to champion the message within their communities to ensure maximum turnout during the registration phase.

The voter registration drive in Banaadir is expected to expand across districts in the coming weeks. Officials have underscored the importance of security, inclusivity, and public awareness to the success of the process.

The event concluded with a symbolic registration ceremony, where several youth and women from the community completed their voter registration, signaling their readiness to participate in Somalia’s democratic future.
