The National Employment Conference (NEC), held from December 6-7, has called the poverty levels in Somalia “unacceptable.”
At the conclusion of the conference, the participants issued a declaration of every issue they had agreed on.
In their views, the country is at a bad place with “unacceptable” poverty and inequality levels.
The conference attracted several participants including representatives from the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and the Federation of Somali Trade Unions (FESTU).
Other representatives were from the Federal Member States (FMS), Somali Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI), the private sector, and academia.
Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) were also represented at the conference.
In Somalia, poverty levels are estimated at around 69 percent, which is ranked the sixth highest in the world.
Poverty rate among Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) is estimated at 74 percent.
