In a joint press conference held in Mogadishu on Sunday, the newly elected African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf emphasized that “Somalia isn’t abandoned,” highlighting ongoing efforts in Addis Ababa to maintain global attention on the nation. Standing alongside President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Youssouf acknowledged the financial and logistical challenges faced by the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) but expressed confidence in finding solutions.
Youssouf, who was elected as the AUC Chairperson in February 2025, brings extensive diplomatic experience to his role. He arrived in Somalia on a two-day official visit.
Youssouf was received at the Aden Added International Airport by a team of senior Somali government officials led by First Deputy Prime Minister Salah Jama before attending a meeting with Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre. Later, he went to Villa Somalia for further discussions with President Mohamud.
Prior to his election, he served as Djibouti’s Minister of Foreign Affairs since 2005, playing a pivotal role in strengthening the country’s diplomatic ties both regionally and internationally. His leadership is expected to focus on addressing key challenges such as regional security, economic integration, and Africa’s role in global affairs.
The joint press conference underscores the AU’s commitment to supporting Somalia in its pursuit of peace, security, and development. Both leaders reaffirmed their dedication to collaborative efforts aimed at overcoming the nation’s challenges and ensuring its prominence on the global stage.
