Kismayo, Somalia — A new Women and Girls Safe Space (WGSS) has officially opened its doors in Kismayo, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to protect and empower women in Jubbaland. The initiative is part of the GASHAAN project, implemented by CARE Somalia (CARESOM) in partnership with Jubbaland’s Ministry of Women, Family Affairs and Human Rights, and generously supported by the United Kingdom through its Mogadishu Embassy.
The newly inaugurated facility aims to provide a secure and inclusive environment where women and girls can access critical services, including psychosocial support, legal aid referrals, skills training, and awareness-raising sessions on gender-based violence (GBV) prevention.
“This safe space is a beacon of hope and strength for women and girls in Kismayo. It not only offers protection and support but also promotes leadership, resilience, and long-term empowerment,” said a representative from Jubbaland’s Ministry of Women, Family Affairs, and Human Rights.
The UK government, through its embassy in Somalia, reaffirmed its commitment to advancing gender equality and human rights in Somalia.
“We’re proud to stand with Somali women and girls,” a UK Embassy spokesperson stated. “Supporting safe spaces like this is a crucial part of our work to build inclusive, peaceful communities,” read a statement from the UK Embassy.
Through the GASHAAN project, CARESOM and its partners aim to address the root causes of gender-based violence and foster a community-led approach to protection and empowerment. Local civil society groups and youth representatives were also present at the launch, underlining the importance of collective action in supporting vulnerable populations.
This safe space will serve hundreds of women and girls across Kismayo, providing a vital lifeline amid growing humanitarian and protection needs in southern Somalia. As insecurity and displacement continue to disproportionately impact women, the facility will play a critical role in ensuring survivors have access to the support they need to recover and rebuild their lives.
