NIEBC Chief Declares Full Readiness for Historic Mogadishu Elections Amid Security Measures

MOGADISHU – The head of the National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (NIEBC), Abdikarim Ahmed Hassan, has affirmed that the organization is ready to conduct tomorrow’s significant local council elections. The Chairman made a clear declaration to calm public concerns, confirming all logistical and operational preparations have been completed throughout the Benadir region. “We are fully prepared in every aspect, and voter safety is guaranteed,” Chairman Abdikarim remarked, responding to questions about security and organization. His statement comes as the city approaches a crucial period, with the electoral body collaborating closely with national security institutions to ensure a secure voting atmosphere. In support of the commission’s preparedness, the Somali Police Force has established a comprehensive security protocol. Police Commissioner Brigadier General Asad Osman Abdullahi has directed limits on vehicle traffic in Mogadishu for election day to protect voters and facilitate the secure transportation of crucial election materials. Officers have been positioned across all 16 districts to safeguard polling locations and help vulnerable voters, such as seniors and individuals with disabilities. The electoral commission has also stated that voter registration and political campaigning have officially ended, with a mandatory “silence day” observed today. This provides voters time to consider their choices before participating in what is being called the first direct, one-person, one-vote local election in Mogadishu in more than five decades. Chairman Abdikarim encouraged all registered voters to participate in large numbers, stressing that their involvement is essential for the city’s democratic development. He emphasized that the commission is dedicated to a transparent and equitable process, supported by the extensive security measures currently implemented.
