NIEBC Officially Launches Voter Registration Exercise in Mogadishu

Voter registration has officially commenced today in Mogadishu, marking a pivotal step in Somalia’s transition toward a one-person, one-vote electoral system. This initiative is part of a broader effort to replace the longstanding clan-based, indirect voting framework with direct elections, aiming to empower citizens to elect their local and federal representatives directly.

The National Independence Electoral and Boundaries Commission (NIEBC) has outlined a comprehensive election schedule, with local council elections planned for June 2025 and federal parliamentary and presidential elections set for September 2025. This move signifies Somalia’s commitment to reinstating democratic processes that have been absent since 1969.

While this development has been lauded as a significant stride toward democratization, it is not without challenges. Some regional leaders, notably from Puntland and Jubbaland, have expressed reservations about the process, citing concerns over inclusivity and constitutional adherence.

Additionally, security concerns persist, particularly with threats from militant groups like Al-Shabaab, which have historically disrupted electoral activities.

Despite these hurdles, the initiation of voter registration in Mogadishu reflects a collective aspiration among Somalis to participate actively in shaping their nation’s future through democratic means.
