NIEC Issues Eight Temporary Certificates of Registration to Police Parties

The National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) has issued temporary certificates to eight political parties in Somalia.

NIEC issued the certificates in conjunction with the Registrar of Political Parties in the country, Mohamed Omar.

The parties received their certificates virtually because of fears over the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced the government to impose several measures to curb the spread of the disease.

Furthermore, NIEC’s Chairperson Ms. Halima Ismail Ibrahim, urged the eight political parties to seek official recognition, which is the next logical step after earning temporary status.

Parties that received their certificates include Alliance for the Future Party, Social Democratic Party, Life and Justice Party, and Citizens United Party.

Others were National Restore Party, the Path to Progress and Peace Party, Soomalinimo Party, and the Justice and Development of Democracy and Self Respectfulness Party.

Since its establishment, NIEC has registered 90 parties in the country.
