The National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) has denied reports that it intends to postpone the upcoming General Elections.
Reports have circulated in the country of NIEC’s plans to shelve this year’s planned elections because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, the poll agency has reassured Somalis that the elections would proceed as scheduled and asked them to shun rumors being spread on social media.
Part of its statement read, “We would like to confirm to the public that reports appearing on social media that we plan to postpone the upcoming elections are nothing but fake.”
The main opposition parties in the country have been warning of possible poll delays and plans to extend the term of President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo’s administration over COVID-19.
