ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Republic of Nigeria has issued a strong declaration confirming its “unwavering commitment” to the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and unity of the Federal Republic of Somalia. In a press release issued on Saturday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, the Nigerian government stated its clear support for the Federal Government in Mogadishu as the only legitimate authority representing the Somali people.
The statement, signed by Spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, highlighted that Nigeria’s position is based on the Charter of the United Nations and the Constitutive Act of the African Union, which require respect for the political independence of all member states. By referencing these charters, Abuja indicated that maintaining Somalia’s national borders is an essential principle of African diplomacy. “Nigeria declares its firm and unequivocal support for the sovereignty, unity, and statehood of the Federal Republic of Somalia,” the Ministry stated.
Nigeria also delivered a serious warning to the international community regarding recent diplomatic developments in the Horn of Africa. The government requested all international actors to “avoid recognizing any portion of Somalia’s territory as an independent entity.” The statement warned that such actions would “only worsen the conflict” and must be prevented to avoid additional instability. This warning places Nigeria alongside other significant African nations that have resisted attempts to divide the Somali state.
Acknowledging the strategic importance of the region, the Ministry noted that Somalia’s stability is “essential to the peace and security of the entire Horn of Africa region and the African continent as a whole.” Nigeria promised to continue assisting Somalia through multilateral frameworks and international cooperation, praising the Federal Government’s work in achieving peace and national reconciliation despite considerable challenges. The statement concluded by requesting all parties to strictly adhere to Somalia’s constitutional order and support its institutions in reconstructing a stable nation.
