Nine Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) soldiers in Somalia have been placed in quarantine after coming into contact with a colleague who has been diagnosed with COVID-19.
Lt. Col. Deo Akiki, who is UPDF’s Deputy Spokesperson, confirmed the news and said, “We have taken the appropriate measures to ensure that COVID-19 does not spread further in the camp.”
The nine came into contact with a UPDF soldier who tested positive to the virulent disease on Wednesday evening.
All the soldiers are part of Africa Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).
The first soldier is in isolation receiving treatment. He had initially displayed symptoms such as persistent coughing and flu, which are associated with the novel Coronavirus disease.
Lt. Col. Akiki further announced that taskforces have already been constituted at the base camp and all Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) to monitor the situation.
