Ninety-Nine Percent of Somali Women and Girls Aged 15-49 Have Undergone FGM

Almost 99 percent of all Somali women and girls in the country have undergone Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Somalia reported this on February 4.

UNICEF published these worrying figures when one counselor spoke with a victim of FGM.

The global organization announced a close collaboration that it’s currently involved in with United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to defeat the practice.

The two organizations have launched the UNFPA-UNICEF JP to End Female Genital Mutilation in Somalia.

To achieve its goals, the organizations are using community-centered approaches to promote positive norms among Somalis in the country.
