NIRA Says it Has Issued Over 1 Million National ID Cards

Mogadishu, Somalia – The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has revealed that more than one million people have received the National Identification Card.

Confirmation shows that all recipients obtained their cards free of charge, with no fees charged to the public.

The registration process operates fully in Galmudug, Hirshabelle, Southwest, and Banadir regions, where citizens are reaping significant benefits. Meanwhile, the federal government runs awareness campaigns emphasizing the importance of the National ID card.

Card issuance remains pending in Puntland, Somaliland, and Jubbaland states due to political, administrative, or technical obstacles. Some regional administrations, affiliated with the Federal Government (FG), have not authorized the process to start in their areas.

Separately, tens of thousands of individuals who registered months ago complain about not receiving their ID cards. They voice confusion over the delays, having been told initially that delivery would occur shortly.
