NISA Kills Top Al-Shabaab Finance Leader; SNA and Danab Neutralize 20 Militants in Regional Offensives

MOGADISHU — Somali security forces, supported by international partners and local militias, have intensified operations against Al-Shabaab across multiple regions this week, resulting in the death of a high-ranking commander and at least 20 other combatants.

High-Value Target Eliminated

The National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), working alongside international allies, executed a precise operation in the Saakow district of Middle Juba on February 8.

The strike resulted in the death of Mohamed Sahal Idle (also known as Abu Osama), a senior Al-Shabaab figure and trusted aide to the group’s leader, Ahmed Diriye (Abu Ubaidah).

Security sources indicate Abu Osama was being prepared to assume the role of the organization’s finance minister following the death of Abdullahi Wadaad, who was neutralized in a joint operation in Lower Shabelle on January 23.

Abu Osama had previously held prominent roles, including Harbor Commander in Kismayo and supervisor of the group’s extortion activities.

Danab Strikes in Lower Juba

In a separate coordinated effort, the elite Danab Special Forces, in cooperation with Jubaland state security personnel, executed a planned operation near Jamaame in the Lower Juba region.

The Ministry of Defence reported that the operation led to the deaths of 14 militants, while one additional combatant sustained injuries.

Clashes in Hiiraan

Meanwhile, in central Somalia, the Somali National Army (SNA), assisted by local community forces, eliminated six suspected militants during a precision operation in Hiiraan province on Wednesday.

The security action unfolded in the Waabweyn district, where government forces intercepted militants moving a water tanker. Officials stated the vehicle was destroyed to prevent its reuse.

The Federal Government characterized these operations as part of continuous initiatives aimed at dismantling terrorist activities and blocking extremists from accessing resources across the country.
