Somalia’s Minister of Defense, Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, has publicly supported President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s push for direct elections, dismissing claims that the government plans to extend its term.
In a media interview on Wednesday, the minister called on opposition politicians to rally behind efforts to transition from the clan-based power-sharing model to a democratic electoral process.
He emphasized that this shift is essential for Somalia’s development and stability, noting that it would pave the way for a more inclusive and progressive political system.
The move aligns with ongoing government initiatives to strengthen democratic governance and enhance Somalia’s role in the Horn of Africa.
