Nur Urges Opposition Parties to Support Somalia’s Quest for Direct Polls

Somalia’s Defense Minister, Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, has voiced strong support for the federal government’s push towards implementing a one-person, one-vote electoral system.

Speaking at the Somali Strategic Communication Forum in Mogadishu, he described the move as a transformative opportunity for the country, particularly for the next generation.

He criticized opposition narratives opposing the initiative, labeling them as “politically motivated steps” that undermine national progress.

The minister emphasized that adopting direct elections represents a significant stride towards democracy, enhancing citizens’ ability to influence governance and ensuring a more inclusive political system.

This reform aims to replace the current clan-based power-sharing model with a universal voting mechanism, a shift many consider vital for Somalia’s political stability and democratization efforts.
