NUSOJ Demands Immediate Release of Journalist Arrested in Puntland

The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) urged authorities in Puntland to release a journalist recently detained in the region.

On February 25, NUSOJ held a joint press conference with Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

The two organizations condemned the arrest of Kilwe Adan Farah on December 27, 2020.

Local police arrested Farah together with Mohamed Khalif.

The two freelance journalists were arrested for publishing photos of the protests held at the time for growing inflation in Puntland.

Khalif was later released from detention.

However, Farah remains in prison. The fact that he is yet to be presented in court to be charged with any crime has also baffled both NUSOJ and RFS.

Omar Faruk Osman, the NUSOJ Secretary General, commended Puntland journalists for operating professionally and courageously in harsh environment.

Osman urged Puntland authorities “reverse the repressive trend” of censoring and intimidating journalists.
