NUSOJ Launches Initiative for Protecting Women Journalists During 16 Days of Activism

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ), partnering with the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives, has launched a key campaign called “National Safeguarding Initiative for Women Journalists.” The event in Mogadishu aligns with the start of the global 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

The effort targets the unique challenges and security issues confronting female media workers in Somalia. With the theme “Establishing Safeguarding Measures for Women Journalists,” it aims to build a media sector where women operate without harassment, discrimination, or violence.

The two-day gathering included journalists, editors, and media leaders from Federal Member States (FMS) and the Benadir region. Talks focused on transforming newsroom practices and enacting strong policies to shield women.

Key Focus Areas

The program rests on core strategies to drive enduring improvements in Somalia’s media field:

Ethical Reporting: Bolstering ethical, survivor-focused coverage of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) for respect and precision.

Newsroom Safety: Developing secure, inclusive workplaces that combat harassment.

Leadership: Empowering women journalists as leaders and change-makers in their outlets.

Policy Reform: Promoting gender-aware editorial guidelines in media organizations for fairness and safety.

At the launch event, attendees wore orange caps and scarves, representing hope for a violence-free world for women. NUSOJ leaders stressed that protecting women journalists advances press freedom and national progress, not just a gender concern.

Funded by Canada’s Government via the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives, the project underscores joint efforts for gender equity and rights protection. It recognizes the crucial contributions of Somali women journalists to the country’s story.

As the 16 Days of Activism proceeds, the program urges media leaders and authorities to enact real steps for women’s safety and career advancement in journalism.
