While celebrating the World Press Freedom Day of 2020, the National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) has condemned the continued attack on press freedom by the government.
According to NUSOJ, the onslaught has deteriorated independent journalism.
This year’s celebrations come at a time of increasing uncertainty and difficult conditions that COVID-19 has created.
Despite the ravages of COVID-19, intimidation and constant arrests and detention by the Federal Government of Somalia, journalists continue to perform their duties doggedly.
NUSOJ has asked the government to cease its constant attacks against journalists and the media industry in general.
Nevertheless, the organization has welcomed the decision by President Farmaajo to reform Penal Code of 1964, which has criminalized journalism.
