OCHA Warns Somalia to Prepare for La Nina

The United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has warned Somalia to prepare for La Lina.

A communiqué from OCHA dated October 16, 2020 shows that La Lina could trigger a massive humanitarian crisis in the country in 2021.

The global organization indicated that Deyr rainy season in 2020 is not living up to expectations thus creating a likelihood of terrible drought-like conditions in the next year.

OCHA reiterated the call from Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of drought emerging out of the ongoing poor or delayed rains, which could move into next year.

Currently, Somalia is in the grip of a triple threat that comprises COVID-19, locust invasion, and flash floods that have already created an unimaginable humanitarian crisis.

Both OCHA and FAO believe that the situation is likely to get substantially worse by 2021 following a dry Jilaal season.
