One Person Dead as Al-Shabaab Raids a Kenyan Police Station

One person has been confirmed dead after Al-Shabaab fighters raided a Kenyan police station located in the northeastern part of the country.

The attack was the second one in two weeks that the Al-Qaeda linked group has carried out in the region.

In today’s attack, which lasted several hours, security forces had a difficult time trying to repulse members of the militia.

According to security authorities, the militants had raided and destroyed a nearby telecommunication mast belonging to a local telecom firm.

With the mast destroyed and communication with the outside world rendered impossible, the extremists then made their way to the local police station, which they besieged for several hours.

A contingent of police officers mostly drawn from Border Patrol Unit, which comprised elite forces, engaged the extremists in a heavy gunfight.

A police officer, who spoke to the media anonymously, said that a fellow officer succumbed to injuries sustained during the hours-long fight.

He also confirmed that three other officers were injured and rushed to Garissa Hospital where they are currently receiving medical care.
