Ongoing Drought in Somalia Has Displaced 750,000 People Since 2021

The ongoing drought in Somalia, which has been described as one of the country’s worst in over four decades, has displaced more than 750,000 people since 2021.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Somalia issued these numbers on May 21.

According to the organization, the situation is likely to worsen as the drought continues worsening in not only Somalia but also the entire Horn of Africa region.

Estimates by other international organizations indicate that close to 23 million people in the region are at risk of facing severe food scarcity or starvation.

IOM’s report shows that lack of adequate rainfall has made more areas uninhabitable hence the decision by locals to move out of their homes.

Furthermore, the situation has made traditional livelihoods unavailable.
