The ongoing drought in Somalia has officially displaced 1 million people.
Aids groups operating in the country confirmed this piece of devastating news in their latest report published on August 11.
Some of the groups that confirmed the news include the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC).
Since the beginning of the year, the drought has left over 750,000 people displaced.
This week, though, the aids groups registered the millionth displaced person.
Mohamed Abdi, the NRC Country Director in Somalia, said that the 1 million internally displaced persons (IDP) in Somalia are a cause of concern.
Abdi said that starvation is now ravaging the entire nation.
“More families are now forced to leave everything behind in search of food, shelter, and water in different parts of the country,” Abdi said.
Magatte Guisse, the UNHCR Representative in Somalia, said that the drought, which is the effect of the climate crisis, has hit vulnerable communities around the country the hardest.
