Opposition candidates have condemned authorities in Somaliland for the eviction of Somalis.
Over the last week, thousands of Somalis in certain parts of Somaliland have been forcefully evicted following a government decree.
On October 6, the Council of Presidential Candidates (CPC), a body that brings together all the presidential aspirants from the opposition, issued a statement on the issue.
In its statement, CPC urged residents of Las Anod, the border town that has experienced the worst of the evictions, to stay put.
The candidates called the evictions an “inhumane act.”
Furthermore, they appealed to the Somaliland’s clerics, scholars, traditional elders, and intellectuals to oppose such acts.
Most of the evictees are women and children.
The CPC now joins a growing chorus of influential bodies and individuals to have opposed the evictions.
