Opposition Candidates Reject New Schedule for Somali Elections

Opposition candidates in Somalia have rejected the new elections schedule released by the Federal Electoral Implementation Team (FEIT).

On Wednesday, December 23, FEIT issued a new schedule.

In it, the electoral body said that elections for candidates vying for senatorial seats would take place between December 31 and January 6.

Similarly, it set January 7 as the deadline for selecting delegates who will vote for the new Members of Parliament (MPs).

However, the opposition has condemned the move.

It said that FEIT had no mandate for setting a new schedule or announcing electoral dates since its composition is compromised and highly disputed.

The opposition candidates also faulted President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo for constantly ignoring their calls for consensus over elections impasse.

In their statement, they urged the international community to recognize Farmaajo as a “spoiler.”
