Opposition Candidates Say Fresh Election Talks Should be Moved to Mogadishu

Opposition candidates have issued a statement recommending the relocation of the fresh talks on elections to Mogadishu.

The politicians, meeting as the Council of Presidential Candidates’ Union, met in Mogadishu on February 10.

In their statement, they said that it would be better to hold the fresh round of talks in the nation’s capital where more stakeholders can attend.

Their statement follows the Wednesday news that President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo has called for fresh talks in Garowe, the capital of the semiautonomous region of Puntland.

The statement by the opposition candidates is similar to those issued by the regional leaders of Puntland and Jubbaland.

President Said Abdullahi Deni and President Ahmed Islam Madobe of Puntland and Jubbaland respectively asked that the talks should be held in Mogadishu.

The talks are to take place from February 15.

Farmaajo announced the resumption of the talks in the face of mounting pressure from the international partners for dialogue to solve the elections impasse.
