The Council of Presidential Candidates Union, comprising opposition politicians, has warned the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) against signing a petroleum exploration deal with two foreign firms.
On January 4, the Council of Presidential Candidates Union released a press statement urging the government not to rush into signing any petroleum exploration and drilling agreement with foreign companies in secret.
Mostly, the Council of Presidential Candidates Union hit out at the government for entertaining such thoughts in the first place knowing full well that its term expires next month (February 2021) when the country holds presidential elections.
In their press statement, the opposition candidates claimed they received information that the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources plans to sign such a deal in the coming days. It said that such a deal could hamper the “stability, unity, and standing” of the nation.
Furthermore, the Council of Presidential Candidates warned that such a “secret deal” would be breach of all the laws and regulations governing the management of natural resources. For this reason, they politicians urge all Somalis to protect the natural resources.
