The Forum for National Parties (FNP), a coalition of opposition parties in Somalia, has asked the UN Security Council to investigate the presence of non-AMISOM troops in the country.
While lauding UNSC for renewing the mandate of African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) to February 28, 2021, FNP said the presence of non-AMISOM troops is a cause for concern.
Furthermore, FNP expressed its gratitude with UNSC for specifying that AMISOM troops should be maintained at a maximum of 19,626 only.
However, FNP feels that Ethiopia has sent more non-AMISOM troops into the Horn of Africa nation in clear breach of UNSC’s Resolution 733 (1992).
The coalition is also convinced that the presence of the Ethiopian troops violates the “political independence, territorial integrity, and sovereignty of Somalia.”
FNP first raised with the African Union. However, it has now scaled the issue up to UN Security Council.
