Opposition Party Asks Members of Somaliland’s COVID-19 Committee to Resign

One of Somaliland’s main opposition parties, Wadani Party, has asked members of the National Health Committee against COVID-19 to resign.

Through its spokesperson, Barkhad Batun, the party asked President Muse Bihi Abdi to dismiss members of the committee in case they refuse to resign voluntarily.

According to Batun, members of the committee have failed to develop a strategic and effective response to the novel Coronavirus that has killed many people in the country.

COVID-19 has brought businesses in the country to a standstill. Government has imposed several measures including closure of schools and imposing curfews around the country too.

In his statement, Batun said, “We call upon President Bihi to remove the officials of the committee from office since they are unable to craft a proper response to COVID-19.”

He also alleges that the committee has nothing to show for the $5 million it budgeted for curbing the spread of the virulent disease in Somaliland.

Batun admitted that the committee needs injection of fresh blood since the current officials have proven incapable of performing their duties effectively.
