Opposition Politicians Urge Turkey Not to Interfere in Somalia Elections

The Council of Opposition Presidential Candidates has warned Turkey to stop interfering in Somalia’s elections.

On December 17, the Council issued a press statement urging Turkey to act as a “neutral” ally instead of taking sides in the country’s elections.

The Council issued the statement following recent remarks by Turkey showing its support towards the appointment of the highly controversial electoral teams.

Several politicians have spoken out against the composition of the Federal Interim Electoral Team (FIET).

According to the leaders, FIET comprises National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) officers, civil servants, and government loyalists.

The council of opposition candidates released a strongly worded letter to Turkey.

It reminded Turkey of the importance of holding the government accountable.

Turkey’s role and presence in Somalia is quite significant considering that it is one of the East African nation’s most important international and development partners.

The Council of Presidential Candidates expressed “disappointment” at the support the Turkish government continues extending to the “unconstitutional” electoral committee.
