The Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has called for urgent action to avert the looming humanitarian crisis in Somalia.
OIC issued a statement citing the worsening situation in Somalia from the ongoing drought.
In its statement dated August 3, OIC said that Somalia has experienced failed rains for the past four seasons in a row.
Hissein Brahim Taha, OIC’s Secretary-General, noted that the world must intervene in Somalia as soon as possible.
Failure to intervene could expose more than 7 million Somalis to famine.
Taha appealed to the international community and the OIC Member States to act fast to avert a possible crisis of biblical proportion.
He reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to implementing the resolution that the Member States adopted in March 2022 during the 48th Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers.
In that session, OIC stated its commitment to help alleviate the suffering of the people of Somalia.
