UNICEF-supported health facilities in Somalia have treated over 133,000 children diagnosed with severe malnutrition in 2020.
The children, many of whom were diagnosed with severe life-threatening wasting diseases, are now enjoying good health.
UNICEF-Somalia is responsible for supporting many health facilities with funds, equipment, and training for personnel in the East African nation.
The global organization works closely with the Ministry of Health, UN Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM), and UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
This year, Somalia has been bedeviled with numerous humanitarian crises that have made it difficult for children to access quality food and enjoy healthy nutrition.
Some of the crises have been caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, floods, and locust invasion that have interfered with the country’s food security.
Consequently, many parents are unable to work and earn a living for taking care of their children.
