Mogadishu, Somalia – More than 70 Khawaarij militants were killed in the past 48 hours during intense fighting between Somali government forces and insurgents in HirShabelle State, the Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism announced on Sunday.
According to the ministry’s statement, the heavy confrontations occurred as part of ongoing military operations aimed at rooting out Al-Shabaab-affiliated extremists in central Somalia. The government hailed the efforts of the national army and regional forces, describing their actions as courageous and effective in degrading the militants’ presence in the region.
“These successful offensives are a testament to the bravery and determination of our armed forces who continue to protect the Somali people and defend our sovereignty,” the statement read.
The government also reiterated its commitment to sustaining pressure on the militants until peace and security are fully restored across the country. Officials urged the public to remain vigilant and to cooperate with security forces by reporting suspicious activities.
HirShabelle, which includes the regions of Hiiraan and Middle Shabelle, has seen heightened military activity in recent months as Somalia intensifies its campaign against extremist groups destabilizing the region.
No casualties were reported on the side of Somali forces, though the ministry noted that the situation remains fluid, and operations are ongoing.
