Pakistan and India at Risk of Locust Migration from Somalia

A UN agency, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), has said that both Pakistan and India are at risk of a locust invasion from Somalia.

Somalia and other countries in the Horn of Africa region have been hit hard by a locust invasion that started late in 2019.

Countries in the Middle East too have felt the brunt of the invasion.

In the last month or so, Pakistan and India have endured a second wave of locust invasion, which FAO believes is about to get worse with the arrival of locusts from Somalia.

This is likely to happen despite the efforts put in place to eradicate locusts from the East African nation.

Ground and aerial measures are in place in Somalia to curb the growth of immature swarms of locusts, which are capable of bringing grave devastation in the region.

FAO has indicated that similar measures are also in place in Southeast Sindh, near border between India and Pakistan.
