The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has formed a partnership with Qatar to reduce food insecurity in Somalia.
The United Nations (UN) organization created the partnership with the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD).
QFFD is the Qatari’s public development institution.
On November 26, the two organizations announced that QFFD would set the ball rolling with a contribution of US$1.7 million.
The organizations signed the agreement to this effect on Friday.
As per the agreement, they will work together to improve access to water. Both organizations also seek to boost water management in Somalia.
Additionally, they will train smallholder farmers as well as herders on finding solutions for the challenges that climate change has created.
Food insecurity is a real threat in Somalia.
Over the last couple of years, the problem has worsened because of drought, floods, locust infestation, and the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Qatar-FAO partnership will benefit over 78,000 households in Somalia.
The agreement comes at the opportune time considering that the East African nation is currently facing drought that threatens millions of people.
