Planeload of Humanitarian Supplies Delivered to Hunger-Stricken Xudur District

A planeload of humanitarian supplies has been delivered to the hunger-stricken region of Xudur District in Bakool.

The plane carrying the supplies landed in Bakool region on the morning of January 18.

Reports indicate that residents in the region are starving following a blockade imposed by Al-Shabaab over the last 10 years.

The plane arrived following an urgent appeal sent out by the government of Southwest State, as food shortage grew severe.

Local sources say that thousands of people are going without food as the blockade forces retailers to increase the price of food.

The sharp increase in the price of food has come at a bad time for local residents.

First, the triple threats of locust infestation, COVID-19 pandemic, and floods coupled with growing insecurity, has made it hard for locals to earn income.

On January 17, President Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Lafta-Gareen visited the area and issued a call for help to the United Nations and the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS).
