Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali issued a statement highlighting the deep historical, cultural, and social ties that exist between Ethiopians and Somalis.
His acknowledgment of shared ancestry, language, and culture underlines the intertwined heritage of the two nations, despite their distinct political boundaries.
Additionally, referencing the sacrifices of Ethiopian soldiers in protecting Somalia from terrorist threats reflects Ethiopia’s significant role in Somalia’s security efforts.
Ethiopian troops, as part of African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), which will now transition to AU Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), have been key players in counter-terrorism operations, particularly against Al-Shabaab.
Such efforts not only strengthen bilateral relations but also contribute to regional stability and cooperation in the Horn of Africa.
The PM was speaking a few hours after Ethiopia and Somalia struck a significant agreement in Ankara talks mediated by Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Wednesday evening.
