Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre traveled to Las Anod, the administrative capital of the SSC-Khaatumo region, today thus marking a significant development in Somalia’s political landscape. This visit underscores the federal government’s recognition of SSC-Khaatumo’s administration and its efforts to stabilize the region following prolonged conflict.
Las Anod, located in the Sool region, has been a focal point of contention between Somaliland and local forces aligned with the federal government. In August 2023, SSC-Khaatumo forces gained control over key areas, including the strategic Goojacade military base, leading to a cessation of hostilities in the region.
Subsequently, in October 2023, the Federal Government of Somalia formally recognized SSC-Khaatumo as an interim administration, affirming that it operates under the Federal Government’s jurisdiction rather than that of Somaliland or Puntland.
Prime Minister Barre’s visit to Las Anod signifies the federal government’s commitment to supporting SSC-Khaatumo’s governance and reconstruction efforts. It also reflects a broader initiative to foster unity and stability within Somalia by engaging directly with regional administrations.
This engagement is pivotal for the ongoing peace and development processes in the region, aiming to rebuild trust among communities and lay the groundwork for sustained governance.
