Mogadishu, Somalia – Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre on Monday called on members of the Somali diaspora to play a greater role in the nation’s development by bolstering support for the armed forces and participating in Somalia’s ongoing democratization process.
Speaking during a public address in Mogadishu, the Prime Minister praised the contributions of the diaspora community, highlighting their role in remittances, investments, and advocacy for Somalia on the global stage. He stressed, however, that the time had come for deeper involvement in key national priorities, particularly security and electoral reforms.
“Our diaspora are not just observers — they are stakeholders in Somalia’s future. We urge them to stand firmly with our armed forces who are defending our people, and to actively contribute to the successful implementation of elections that reflect the will of the Somali people,” said Prime Minister Barre.
The Prime Minister’s call comes amid preparations for Somalia’s transition to universal suffrage and broader efforts to stabilize the country after decades of conflict. The Somali government has been engaged in both military operations against Al-Shabaab insurgents and political reforms aimed at strengthening institutions.
Barre also emphasized that the diaspora’s technical expertise, economic resources, and global networks are invaluable assets in rebuilding the country’s security infrastructure and democratic systems. He encouraged them to take part in civic education, election monitoring, and investment in local peacebuilding initiatives.
Somalia’s estimated two-million-strong diaspora community resides mainly in North America, Europe, and the Middle East. They are credited with sending over $1.3 billion annually in remittances — funds that support millions of families and help drive local economies.
In closing, the Prime Minister reaffirmed his government’s commitment to creating an inclusive, participatory political environment and urged Somali expatriates to be part of the national journey toward peace, stability, and democratic governance.
