Police Officers Kill a Shopkeeper in Mogadishu in Row over Torn Money

A police officer shot and killed a 70-year old shopkeeper in Mogadishu in a row over torn money on Tuesday.

The elderly shopkeeper, who was identified as Omar Hassan Moalim, ran a stall along a road in Hamar Jajab.

Eyewitnesses said the officer shot Moalim after he refused to accept a tattered note worth Shs. 2,000, which is roughly about US$0.8 in value.

A close friend of the shopkeeper said the officer rushed to grab his gun after Moalim refused to accept the tattered note.

Upon returning, the officer first shot in the air. Later, he aimed the gun at Moalim’s head and fired a single shot that killed the shopkeeper on the spot.

Moalim’s body is set to be interred on Wednesday in his village of Eljale in Lower Shabelle.

Police officers in the area confirmed that they had already apprehended the officer, who is set to be arraigned in court as soon as possible.
