Poverty Rate in Somalia Stands at 68 Percent, Says UNDP

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) says that Somalia has a poverty rate of 68 percent.

In the latest SDG Voluntary National Review (VNR), UNDP mentioned the causes of poverty.

The most common causes include conflict, instability, insecurity, and climate change.

UNDP recognized the fact that Somalia is currently emerging from decades of civil conflicts. Fights between different clans have also been quite deadly.

“The East African nation has been on an upward trajectory,” the report adds.

Nevertheless, the nation remains beholden to multiple challenges at the domestic and international levels.

Climate-related shocks and the recent COVID-19 pandemic are a few of the challenges holding the country back from fully realizing its potential.
