President Muse Bihi Abdi of Somaliland expressed optimism in a recent interview about the growing momentum toward Somaliland’s international recognition, while confirming that Somaliland and Ethiopia are moving forward with their new bilateral accord.
QThe agreement, which involves Ethiopia recognizing Somaliland’s independence in exchange for leasing a naval base, is seen as mutually beneficial, particularly for the economic prospects of the Horn of Africa.
President Bihi reiterated the strong domestic support for this deal, describing it as crucial for Somaliland’s future.
He also emphasized the historical legitimacy of Somaliland’s claim to independence, referencing its brief union with Somalia, which ended in 1991, following conflict and atrocities.
Somaliland’s stability and ability to maintain security and open trade, compared to Somalia’s internal conflicts, were key points in his message.
Regarding foreign relations, Bihi criticized the Arab League’s disregard for Somaliland and addressed the closure of Egypt’s cultural center in Somaliland.
He questioned Egypt’s stance on a unified Somalia, as recently mentioned by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
Lastly, Bihi acknowledged the delay in Somaliland’s presidential elections, affirming that they are scheduled for November 13, 2024 and that they will ensure a peaceful and democratic process for selecting Somaliland’s future leader.
