The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) has disbursed $1 million to help Puntland mitigate the effects of the recent flash floods that left a trail of destruction behind.
FGS’s donation is a rare act of philanthropy by a regime that has been under intense attack for not doing enough to extend humanitarian assistance to Somalis.
Further, the donation comes hot on the heels of President Mohamed Abdullahi’s expression of sympathy with the residents of Puntland.
The Monday night flash floods left a trail of destruction, deaths, injuries, and displacements that have shocked the entire region.
President Farmaajo’s administration hopes that Puntland’s leadership will use the money to help victims of the floods to get food, proper shelter, and medication.
Authorities will also use part of the funds to intensify their search and rescue missions, which are into their third day.
On Thursday, while addressing a press conference in Garowe, Abdiweli Gaas and Abdirahman Farole requested for urgent humanitarian aid.
