MOGADISHU — President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, accompanied by Defence Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi and Somali National Army Commander Brigadier General Ibrahim Mohamed Mohamud, has laid the foundation stone for the headquarters of the Somali National Army Orphans Care Agency.
The ceremony took place on April 12, marking the 66th anniversary of the Somali National Army’s establishment, a date of national significance that honors the struggles and sacrifices of the nation’s armed forces.
Agency to Support Families of Fallen Heroes
The agency will serve a crucial function in providing care and support for the children of soldiers who sacrificed their lives defending the nation. It received approval from the Council of Ministers after a proposal was submitted by the Ministry of Defence.
Creating this agency demonstrates the government’s dedication to protecting the rights and future of children orphaned by armed forces personnel, ensuring they have access to education, care, and a respectable standard of living.
A key highlight of the 66th anniversary celebrations was the launch of the Orphans Care Agency designed to support families of fallen soldiers, with authorities stating that the initiative recognizes the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces and reinforces the state’s commitment to their welfare.
President Praises Army’s Sacrifices
During the commemorative event, President Mohamud highlighted the army’s crucial role in national defense and civilian protection, emphasizing that the forces also contribute significantly to humanitarian efforts and community rescue operations.
“Heroes of the Somali National Army have saved 20 million Somalis. They do not only defend with weapons, but also provide assistance. The achievements they have made today will be written in history. Congratulations,” the president said.
“Our armed forces are the shield of our nation and the foundation upon which Somalia’s peaceful and prosperous future will be built,” President Mohamud stated.
Defence Minister Commends Armed Forces
Defence Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi congratulated the Somali National Armed Forces on their 66th anniversary, emphasizing their role in protecting the nation and preserving unity.
In a statement, Fiqi noted that the anniversary commemorates the history and sacrifices of the armed forces, acknowledging their contribution to defending sovereignty and maintaining stability. He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to enhancing the military, including improving equipment, capacity, and personnel welfare.
Army Commander Highlights Military Successes
Somali National Army Commander Brigadier General Ibrahim Mohamed Mahmoud described the forces as characterized by resilience and bravery, considering the anniversary a moment of pride.
“Over the past year, our forces have made significant advances in dismantling terrorist networks, reclaiming key territories, and protecting our people. These efforts have directly contributed to the reduction in Al-Shabaab attacks and improved security across the country,” the commander said.
Military Parade and National Commemoration
The anniversary celebration served not only as a tribute to the army’s legacy since its establishment in 1960, but also as a demonstration of its ongoing transformation into a more capable and modern force committed to securing the nation.
Alongside the welfare launch, Somalia held a military parade in the capital, showcasing troops and equipment as part of the annual commemoration of the army’s founding in 1960. Various units and divisions of the Somali National Army were presented, showcasing their organization, discipline, and readiness, including a display of troops equipped with modern military vehicles, advanced weaponry, and combat aircraft.
The combined events reflected both remembrance of past sacrifices and a renewed focus on improving the welfare and resilience of Somalia’s security forces.
Commitment to National Security
The federal government has in recent years prioritized rebuilding the armed forces as part of broader efforts to stabilize Somalia and transition security duties from international partners to national institutions.
The anniversary occurs as Somali forces continue operations against Al-Shabaab and assume greater security responsibilities nationwide. Officials said the commemoration signaled steady progress in reclaiming control over the country’s security and governance structures.
